From the rebellious flapper dresses of the 1920s, influenced by the Harlem Renaissance, to the iconic lettuce hem popularized by Black designer Stephen Burrows, Black creatives have continuously set the tone for style. The rise of logomania, pioneered by Harlem’s Dapper Dan, transformed luxury branding into a hip-hop fashion statement. Despite these contributions, the fashion industry has often overlooked Black influence. As we celebrate Black History Month, it’s time to recognize and honor the lasting impact of Black culture on fashion.
